Genetic Breast and Ovarian Cancer and
Women at High Risk

The Symposium is open to anyone who would like the most up-to-date information about genetic breast and ovarian cancer: high risk individuals, anyone with a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer and those with a known BRCA mutation. The Symposium is also open to health care providers.

Environmental Concerns and Risk Reduction: Thursday, July 14, 7-8:30 PM

Learn how to keep your inner and outer environment safe from the hormone-disrupting household, garden, beauty and personal care items in your daily life. We will discuss how to choose safe and effective products for your family’s use and learn how to strengthen your body’s resistance by incorporating certain therapeutic food, herbs and supplements.

The Nature/Nurture of Healing: Thursday, November 10, 7-8:30 PM

Learning to care for ourselves has been the focus of this on-going series. Exploring the importance of early detection, understanding the mind-body-spirit interventions that nurture and promote healing have been shared. Yet so many women still resist fully embracing self-care. Join us as we learn ways to avoid sabotaging our own good health regimens.

  • Breast self-exam every month for early detection
  • Annual mammogram for women over 40
  • Manual breast exam by a physician
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes a day or increase physical activity enough to “break a sweat”
  • Control weight gain after menopause
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables, whole-grains and cereals. Also, reduce servings of high fat foods; avoid red meat and many dairy products
  • Increase daily intake of calcium-rich foods
  • Avoid wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages
  • Avoid tobacco products - smokers are encouraged to join a stop-smoking program, as soon as possible
  • Work on maintaining a positive mental attitude, which helps reduce stress and can improve emotional and physical health
  • Select a breast imaging physician that has completed a fellowship in mammography or those who spend more than 50 percent of their time reading mammograms

Select a breast care center based on the following criteria:

  1. Doctors who specialize in breast disease and breast cancer
  2. Facility that offers a wide range of breast imaging services, comprehensive breast care treatments and innovative breast surgery procedures
  3. Practice focuses on each patient’s physical, emotional and lifestyle needs
  4. Provides educational programs and helps organize support group
