Breast Cancer Screening
Dr. Elliott recommends beginning yearly mammography at approximately age 35 to 40. If there are no risk factors, beginning at age 40 is sufficient. If the mammogram reveals a fatty breast, then a yearly mammogram is sufficient. If a breast is dense, a woman needs a breast exam, mammogram, and screening breast ultrasound once a year. Mammograms miss up to 40% of breast cancers. Breast MRI is much more sensitive—96% to 99%—if you have an MRI that is negative, you are virtually assured there is no breast cancer present. Also, an important factor is who is reading the breast imaging study? Ideally, the studies are interpreted by a dedicated breast imager. As breast cancers are found that are smaller and smaller, survival rates are improving. Good results are being seen related to early detection and better treatment.C click on and listen to recent media about Montclair Breast Center.
