If I do have a breast disease or breast cancer, will I be able to see the same doctor throughout my treatment?

Yes. Keep in mind there may be an extenuating circumstance. If the doctor herself is ill or a medical emergency arises, you may choose or be assigned another doctor for that one appointment.

If I’m diagnosed with breast cancer, will I know if I can have reconstructive surgery before the actual surgery to remove my cancer?

Yes. As soon as a patient is told they have breast cancer, they are given a plan. The plan outlines all the possible options and procedures: lumpectomy, radiation therapy, sentinel node biopsy, etc. Reconstructive surgery is usually performed during the same operation as the removal of the cancer.

Do all the doctors at the Montclair Breast Center perform the reconstructive surgery or do I have to find my own surgeon?

In general, the Montclair Breast Center works with Dr. Allen Rosen of The Plastic Surgery Group. Formerly in Bloomfield, NJ., Dr. Rosen and his staff are now conveniently located within our own Montclair Breast Center at 37 North Fullerton Ave. Montclair. Dr. Rosen’s results are always excellent and he is a wonderful doctor to work with.

If I’m nervous the night before surgery, is there someone I can talk to?

Absolutely! Our nurses are always available to speak with you, even at night. Also, some patients may request or need a sedative so they can get a good night’s sleep. We are eager to help our patients feel as comfortable and soothed as possible throughout the entire process.

Can my family wait for me near the surgery room?

Yes. Absolutely. As a matter of fact, the vast majority of our surgeries are performed at our Center's own Same-Day Surgery facility located on the lower level of Montclair Breast Center. Our patients have the luxury and convenience of using our fully accredited ambulatory surgery center. But these are not the only advantages. Our breast imagers and surgeons are always available to speak with you and your family after surgery because the offices are in the same building. This facilitates communication and enhances the doctor-patient relationship.

The doctor will see your family immediately before surgery and be available to speak with them again right after the surgery.

Are there people I can talk to who have used your practice or have been treated by the Montclair Breast Center for cancer?

Yes. Not only will we give you names of people who have been our patients, we will try to match you up with a patient who has similar circumstances. For example, if you are a mother of young children, we will give you the names of other mothers with young children. If you are a senior citizen, we’ll find another one for you to talk to. In addition, we run support groups that meet weekly and you can attend as many or as few as you like.

What hospitals are you affiliated with?

When not using the North Fullerton Surgicenter, we use Mountainside Hospital, on the Montclair/ Glen Ridge border, and St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, both in Essex County New Jersey.

Who will be reading my mammogram?

At  Montclair Breast Center, we have only fellowship trained or subspecialized dedicated breast imaging specialists.  Research has shown that these specialists will find up to 40% more cancers than a general radiologist who often reads mammograms at other centers. The experience, training and skills of the physician evaluating the mammogram is even more important than the technology used.  Here we have the benefit of the best of both physicians and technology.

If I have a breast problem how long will I have to wait for my appointment?

Typically,  we can make appointments within a few days for patients presenting with new worrisome physical exam changes or for comprehensive consultation after an abnormal outside mammogram reading.  Biopsies if needed can often be performed on the same day as the initial visit.

What experience do the physicians have with minimally invasive biopsies?

All of our physicians have been specially trained and have been performing these types of biopsies for many years. At some facilities, women may never even be given the option for ultrasound guided or stereotactic guided biopies because the physicians do not perform them or because they do not have the equipment.  At Montclair Breast Center, all state of the art options are given to a patient who then can make her own decision based on personal needs/preferences.
