Practical Tips for Reclaiming Sexuality after Breast Cancer

Has your sexuality been impacted by a battle with breast cancer? If so, wouldn’t you like to reclaim that sexuality? Cancer treatment can have many effects on the woman undergoing treatment, as well as on her partner. Often, during active treatment, sexual interest and activity diminishes. It may be difficult to incorporate sexuality back into your relationship. Taking the time to talk about your sexual concerns while listening to your partner’s concerns is essential. Working together as a couple is important in the process of sexual healing.

Dr. Barbara Bartlik is a psychiatrist and sex therapist with 25 years of experience. She will discuss how to get started with reclaiming your sexuality and explain techniques for you and your partner to use to increase sexual confidence, playfulness, and intimacy.

One of the most common and challenging issues faced by those with a cancer diagnosis is the fear of the cancer returning. These fears are often heightened in anticipation of medical tests and follow-up doctor visits. In this workshop you will learn what you can do to manage those fears, both internally and through behavior, and how to adapt to a “new normal” as a way of not only surviving, but thriving.

Joan Framo Runfola, ACSW, LCSW is an oncology social worker, licensed psychotherapist and CancerGuide with over 30 years of experience, as well as a twelve year breast cancer survivor.

Caretaking a loved one who has been diagnosed with breast cancer can be overwhelming. Stressful feelings can lead to burn out, lack of attention to self, guilt, and the need for your own emotional support. Learning to maintain a balance between your loved one’s disease and your own life is essential. Please join us to learn strategies and coping skills to find this balance.
