Bone Density Test at Montclair Breast Center in Montclair, New Jersey

Sandra Klank, RT Mammogram Technologist, measures the height of our patient before she lies down on the bone density scanner. This is part of the process to diagnose osteoporosis.
In keeping with our proactive approach to women’s healthcare, Montclair Breast Center offers testing for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, a skeletal disorder characterized by declining bone strength, poses a major threat to women. Osteoporosis affects over 20 million American women, an amazing number for a largely preventable condition. Early detection is necessary to prevent the devastating complications of hip and vertebral compression fractures.
Women reach peak bone mass in their early twenties and then start to lose bone at a rate of 1% per year at age 35. At menopause this rate increases dramatically. Caucasian and Asian women are particularly at risk. The probability that a 50-year-old Caucasian woman will have a hip fracture during her life is 14% (higher than some women’s risk of breast cancer). Maintaining bone health is a lifelong process and women of all ages can take steps to reduce bone loss and limit or delay osteoporosis. We recommend a baseline DEXA scan at age 45-50. Screening should continue on a regular basis every 2 to 3 years.
The DEXA scan is an X-ray of the hip and spine that measures bone mass. If detected early, osteoporosis can be prevented and treated. Our professional staff will perform this non-invasive test and discuss the measures an individual can take to increase bone density.
